IBM Macro Assembler is an IBM OEM rebranded release of Microsoft Macro Assembler, and was intended only for use with the IBM PC. Macro Assembler provides support for writing programs directly in the 8088/8086's native machine language.
This was one of the standard language products that IBM provided for the IBM Personal Computer. Other standard language products included Fortran, Pascal, and Cobol.
IBM Macro Assembler/2, is the first version of Macro Assembler to include support for OS/2. The executables are dual-mode applications for both DOS and OS/2 1.x.
Do not confuse this rebranded version with the earlier DOS-only IBM Macro Assembler version 2.00.
This version is functionally on par with Microsoft Macro Assembler 4.0, except this version includes OS/2 support. Only version 5.1 and 6.0 of Microsoft's Macro Assembler contain OS/2 support.
